In 2013 Costa Rica hosted for the first time the Central American Games, the major Olympic event in the region. This is the only time in 50 years since its addition as part of the International Olympic Committee cycle that Costa Rica has hosted this event.

In 2018, Costa Rica elected its youngest president ever, Carlos Alvarado Quesada casting 60% of voter turnout, for a total of 1 322 908 votes.

Elected for 2 consecutive terms by the City Council to prepare the city of San Jose to host the country's 1st major Olympic event and 1st FIFA World Cup, co-managing an annual budget of US$3 million.
